# Theory analysis

> An evaluation of how well your session aligned with established therapeutic frameworks like CBT, MI, and person-centered therapy.

The Theory Analysis report evaluates how well your clinical approach aligned with established therapeutic frameworks. It helps you connect the practical things you did in session to the theoretical models behind them.

## Supported frameworks

### Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)

The AI looks for:

* Identification of cognitive distortions
* Thought-feeling-behavior connections
* Goal-oriented problem solving
* Behavioral activation principles

### Motivational interviewing (MI)

The AI looks for use of OARS:

* **Open questions** — inviting exploration
* **Affirmations** — recognizing strengths
* **Reflections** — mirroring ambivalence
* **Summaries** — drawing together themes

Also: eliciting change talk, rolling with resistance, supporting self-efficacy, and exploring ambivalence.

### Person-centered therapy

The AI looks for:

* Unconditional positive regard
* Empathic understanding
* Genuineness and congruence
* Supporting client autonomy and self-direction

### Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT)

The AI looks for:

* Miracle question technique
* Scaling questions
* Exception finding
* Strength-based framing

### Biopsychosocial model

The AI looks for evidence you addressed all three domains:

* **Biological** — medical history, physical symptoms, medications
* **Psychological** — thoughts, emotions, coping patterns
* **Social** — relationships, environment, stressors

## What your theory report shows

**Primary theoretical orientation** — the framework most strongly reflected in your session, with a percentage match.

**Secondary orientations** — additional frameworks evident in your approach, showing theoretical flexibility.

**Technique inventory** — a list of specific theory-based techniques you used, with transcript examples.

**Adherence score** — how faithfully you followed the principles of your primary orientation.

## How to use theory analysis

### Connect theory to practice

Use this report to see how classroom learning translates into clinical behavior. It can reveal gaps between knowing a framework in theory and actually applying it in a real (simulated) encounter.

### Develop your clinical style

Over multiple sessions, the theory report helps you:

* Discover your natural theoretical leanings
* Experiment deliberately with frameworks you want to strengthen
* Develop an integrated, flexible approach that isn't rigidly locked into one model

### Prepare for supervision

Bring the theory analysis to supervision sessions to discuss:

* Whether your theoretical choices were appropriate for this specific scenario
* Where your application was strong vs. surface-level
* Areas where more training or reading would deepen your practice

<Note>Most effective clinicians integrate multiple frameworks rather than applying one rigidly. A high adherence score to a single model isn't always the goal — appropriate theoretical flexibility is often a sign of clinical sophistication.</Note>

<Tip>Theory analysis works best when combined with the [Annotated Transcript](/docs/simulations/annotated-transcript) to see specific moments of theory in action, and [Chat with Feedback](/docs/simulations/chat-with-feedback) to explore theoretical concepts in depth.</Tip>
