# Program client visibility

> Control which AI clients students in your program see on the Simulations page using an allow list, a block list, or the full open catalog.

Program client visibility lets a program limit which AI clients its students can browse and start on the **Simulations** page. Use it to keep a program's catalog aligned with its curriculum, for example hiding advanced clients from an intro program or curating a short list for a specific course of study.

By default, nothing is filtered. Every program starts with the full catalog, and students only see a restricted catalog after a visibility mode is configured for their program.

## Visibility modes

Each program has one of three modes:

| Mode                       | What students see                                                         |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Unrestricted** (default) | The full client catalog. Nothing is filtered.                             |
| **Block list**             | The full catalog except the specific clients on the program's block list. |
| **Allow list**             | Only the clients on the program's allow list.                             |

  In allow list mode, an empty list means students see no clients at all. Make sure the allow list is populated before switching a program to this mode.

## Where the filter applies

When a program restricts visibility, hidden clients disappear everywhere students browse for practice:

* The **Simulations** page and its client cards
* The **Presenting Issues** browse page
* The client picker when building or filtering **[focused scenarios](/docs/guides/focused-scenarios)**
* Direct links to a hidden client (`/case-link/...`). Opening one redirects to the Simulations page instead of the client.

## How visibility is resolved

* **No program membership means the full catalog.** Students who don't belong to a program, or whose programs are all unrestricted, see everything, exactly as before.
* **Multiple programs combine permissively.** If you belong to several programs, a client is visible when *any* of your programs shows it. Joining an additional program never shrinks your catalog.
* **School admins always see the full catalog**, regardless of program settings.

  Program visibility works alongside custom client sharing. A custom client built in the [Client Builder](/docs/simulations/client-builder) still follows its own sharing rules; program visibility only decides whether a client appears in your program's catalog.

## Setting it up

Visibility modes and allow or block lists are configured per program by the SimCare team. To restrict the catalog for your program, contact [hello@simcare.ai](mailto:hello@simcare.ai) with:

1. The program to configure
2. The mode you want (block list or allow list)
3. The clients to block or allow
