# Annotated transcript

> A line-by-line view of your conversation with color-coded highlights and inline AI comments.

The Annotated Transcript gives you a line-by-line view of your full conversation with the AI patient. Each of your statements is color-coded and annotated so you can see exactly what you did well and where you missed an opportunity.

## Understanding the color system

| Color  | Meaning                                            |
| ------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Green | Excellent — effective technique or strong phrasing |
| Yellow | Acceptable but could be improved |
| Blue | Neutral observation or context note |
| Red | Missed opportunity or area needing attention |

Each highlight includes an inline comment explaining what happened. For yellow and red highlights, the comment also explains what you could have done differently.

## Types of annotations

### Skill recognition

When you use a technique well, the AI tags it:

* "✓ Open-ended question"
* "✓ Empathic reflection"
* "✓ Effective summarization"
* "✓ Active listening demonstrated"

### Constructive suggestions

For yellow highlights, you'll see improvement recommendations:

* "Consider exploring the emotional impact here"
* "This would be a good opportunity to summarize"
* "Try using more open-ended phrasing"

### Clinical insights

The AI notes clinically significant moments:

* "Important symptom mentioned — good follow-up"
* "Risk factor identified — ensure thorough assessment"
* "Differential diagnosis consideration demonstrated"

### Communication patterns

Observations about your overall style:

* "Question density high — allow more space for patient"
* "Good pacing in this section"
* "Rapport-building evident"

## How to use your annotated transcript

<Steps>
  <Step title="Read through completely first">
    Read the full transcript without stopping at every annotation. This lets you recall the flow of the conversation and notice overall patterns.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Focus on red and yellow highlights">
    These need your attention. Read the AI's explanation for each, consider the alternative approach it suggests, and look for patterns — one yellow is fine, the same issue appearing ten times is something to work on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Study your green highlights">
    Understand *why* those moments were effective. These are techniques you can replicate deliberately in future sessions.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Create an action plan">
    Identify 2–3 specific areas to improve, note techniques that worked well, and plan how to address gaps in your next session.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Common annotation themes to watch for

**Question types**

* Closed questions that could be opened
* Leading questions to avoid
* Multiple questions asked at once (choose one)
* Effective exploratory questions

**Empathy and validation**

* Missed opportunities for empathic response
* Strong validation statements
* Premature reassurance (jumping to solutions before the patient feels heard)
* Appropriate normalizing

**Clinical assessment**

* Thorough vs. incomplete history taking
* Risk assessment completeness
* Symptom exploration depth
* Important details followed up

<Tip>Review your transcript within 24 hours of the session while the experience is still fresh. Share it with your supervisor to use as a structured conversation starter — the color coding makes it easy to focus discussion on specific moments.</Tip>

<Note>The annotated transcript works best when combined with other feedback tools. Use [Advanced Skills](/docs/simulations/advanced-skills) for skill-specific ratings and [Theory Analysis](/docs/simulations/theory-analysis) for framework-based evaluation.
