# Hiding Identifying Details

> Replace names, dates, places, and contact details in a transcript so reviewers and AI don't see them.

A session can have its transcript **redacted**. Names, dates, places, contact details, and other identifiers are replaced with placeholders for everyone reviewing it, AI feedback included. The person who recorded the session, the owner, can still see the originals.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Redaction is not full de-identification. Automatic detection can miss nicknames, unusual names, and mumbled speech. The audio and video still contain everything that was said, so names are still audible.

## Turn it on

| Where | Who | How |
| - | - | - |
| Program default | Program admin | **Program Management**, then **Student Visibility**, or **Meet**, then **Settings** |
| One session | The host | Turn on **Hide identifying details** on the pre-join screen, or on the upload form |

New sessions start from the program default. Scheduling a meeting for someone else uses the host's program default.

![Pre-join screen with Transcribe this session and Hide identifying details both enabled.](https://mintcdn.com/simcare-83a8bffd/SRZMQ3Qe2EYv843N/images/meet/hide-identifying-details.jpg?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=SRZMQ3Qe2EYv843N\&q=85\&s=689ed145004c16175dcf8aea2676695d)

Enable Hide identifying details before joining the session.

## What reviewers see

* Identifiers become consistent placeholders, such as **\[NAME\_1]**. The same name always gets the same placeholder.
* Speakers appear as **Counselor** or **Speaker 2**, not real names.
* Medical terms such as medications, doses, and conditions stay visible.
* Lines that were never scanned show **\[Not yet redacted]** and their text stays hidden.

This applies to graders, peers, admins, and faculty, and to AI feedback.

## What the owner can do

* Turn on **Show identifying details** to see the original text. Each time you do, it's recorded in the audit log.
* Hide a phrase the detector missed, everywhere it appears.
* Restore something that was hidden by mistake.

If you re-transcribe the recording, the lines are replaced and your corrections are lost.

## Things to know

* Only the owner can rename speakers on a redacted session.
* If you turn redaction on for a session that already has a live transcript, its lines show **\[Not yet redacted]** until you re-transcribe from the recording.
* Redaction doesn't cover text people type, such as comments.
