# The AI Note Taker

> Meet includes an optional, HIPAA-compliant AI note taker that transcribes and summarizes your session.

Before you join a meeting, you can turn on the AI note taker. It works similarly to other AI note-taking tools you may have used, but it's HIPAA-compliant and built for supervision sessions.

## What it does

While the meeting is happening, the note taker listens in and builds a transcript of what's said. Once the meeting ends, it generates a summary of the session.

  It can take a few minutes for the transcript and summary to finish generating after a meeting ends. If they're not showing up yet on the [Past Sessions](/docs/meet/past-sessions) page, check back shortly.

## Giving consent

Before the note taker can record, you'll be asked to give consent. Confirming consent is also what drops you into the meeting itself.

  Since these are supervision recordings, it's good practice to let everyone joining know ahead of time that the session will be recorded.
