# Step 0.1: Testing with View as Student

> Use View as Student to experience FieldX exactly as your students do — without leaving your admin account.

The old "sandbox" workflow has been replaced by **View as Student**. Instead of switching between dummy accounts, coordinators can now impersonate any real student in their program for up to 30 minutes — read-only, safe, and fully audit-logged.

<Note>Looking for the dedicated "View as Student" guide? See [View as Student](/docs/fieldx/view-as-student) for the full reference.</Note>

## What it replaces

| Old workflow | New workflow |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Sandbox accounts for student, faculty supervisor, site supervisor | **View as Student** (covers the student view directly) |
| Test cohort in a separate sandbox program | Create a test cohort in your real program — `Show Archived` lets you hide it later |
| Manual context switching between accounts | One-click impersonation from the Members tab, cohort, or student details |

You can still invite faculty supervisors and site supervisors to your real program — they have their own views and you can join cohorts as faculty whenever you want to test the faculty side.

## Recommended things to try

* **The full clearance flow** — start View as Student on a real student who's in clearance, and walk through what they see step by step. See [Getting started & clearance tasks](/docs/fieldx/students/step-1-getting-started-and-clearance-tasks).
* **Log hours as a student** — open the Timesheet tab inside View as Student to confirm the agreement modal, activity types, and supervisor options match your program settings.
* **Create a new cohort** — invite students, generate the join code, and try enrolling. See [Set up cohorts](/docs/fieldx/step-3-set-up-cohorts).
* **Create and assign a form** — use the Assignments tab to build a form (or use an AI-converted upload). See [Building forms](/docs/fieldx/building-forms).
* **Trigger a Run Report** — pick HRS-01 (Weekly Activity Ledger) and run it against a placeholder student.

Most importantly — explore! Try the Ask AI tab, the Todos system, the Notifications settings, and the program-management page. Nothing you do as a coordinator on the program side will affect a student's data unless you're acting through View as Student (which is read-only by design).

## Read-only protections

While View as Student is active, the impersonation banner stays at the top of the screen and **all actions are tagged as impersonation** in your activity log. The student can't tell you logged in as them — the events you see are theirs, not yours.

<Tip>Once you're done testing, click **Exit Student View** in the amber banner at the top of the screen to return to your coordinator account. Sessions auto-expire after 30 minutes.</Tip>

## What about faculty and site supervisor accounts?

There's no "view as faculty" feature. To test those flows:

* **Join a cohort as faculty** by generating the join code from the cohort and pasting it into the **Join Cohort as Instructor** modal under a faculty account
* **Site supervisor onboarding** happens via the magic-link invite that fires when a student adds a supervisor during clearance — to test it, complete the supervisor step inside View as Student using an email you own

<Note>Next step: With testing in place, customize FieldX for your program. See [Customization settings](/docs/fieldx/step-0-2-customization-settings) to configure academic terms, hour requirements, and clearance.</Note>
